The Clinton West Condominums
At 516 West 47th Street in Hell's Kitchen, the Clinton West Condominium has undergone a subtle yet significant transformation. The recent renovation of the building’s elevators, led by United Vertical Group in partnership with Walsh Associates and Century Elevator, demonstrates how thoughtful design can redefine even the most functional spaces. This project blends modern materials with careful craftsmanship, resulting in elevators that quietly yet confidently enhance the building's overall aesthetic. Elevator interiors are often overlooked, relegated to mere utility. However, at Clinton West, the two passenger elevators have been transformed into architectural statements—each detail thoughtfully curated to enhance both aesthetics and durability.
The upper section captivates with its crisp, clean lines, composed of three horizontal panels on each wall, all sheathed in self-edged white plastic laminate from Wilsonart. The choice of laminate, renowned for its durability and ease of maintenance, provides a sleek, contemporary backdrop that exudes simplicity and elegance. In contrast, the lower section introduces a tactile dimension that reflects the building’s urban context. Each wall is clad in DS-5 architectural wire mesh by Banker Wire, framed with stainless steel binders. The mesh, with its intricate pattern and robust texture, evokes a sense of craftsmanship that is both industrial and refined, adding depth and complexity to the design. A stainless steel chair rail subtly delineates the upper and lower sections, balancing both form and function. Paired with a flat stainless steel handrail on the back wall, this design choice enhances not only the visual appeal but also the usability of the space. The consistent use of stainless steel—from door fronts to transoms and reveals—creates a unified metallic sheen that ties the entire design together. The flooring is perhaps the most defining feature of these elevators. The 24" x 24" Empire Black Swan porcelain tiles by Crossville Inc. ground the design with their deep, rich tones. These tiles add a luxurious finish that complements the lighter elements above, creating a sense of balance and sophistication that elevates the overall aesthetic. The dark, anchoring floor draws the eye and reinforces the elevators’ role as pivotal design elements within the condominium.
At Clinton West Condominium, the elevators are not just utilitarian spaces; they are an integral part of the building's identity. United Vertical Group, alongside Walsh Associates and Century Elevator, has crafted a design that is both timeless and forward-thinking—one that speaks to the discerning tastes of the building’s residents and visitors alike. For architects, interior designers, and elevator contractors, this project exemplifies the impact of thoughtful design. It challenges the notion that utility and beauty are mutually exclusive, demonstrating that they can coexist in perfect harmony. The Clinton West elevators are a testament to what can be achieved when innovation, craftsmanship, and materiality converge in the pursuit of design excellence.
